LSU researchers have developed biodegradable Mardi Gras beads as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic ones. The conventional beads pose environmental hazards, polluting waterways, harming wildlife, and persisting in landfills for centuries, sometimes containing toxic chemicals. The new beads are created from microalgae and compostable plastic, even containing sunflower seeds to promote plant growth after disposal. These innovative beads aim to reduce plastic waste and the carbon footprint of Mardi Gras celebrations. While currently more expensive, LSU intends to make the 3D printing files for the beads publicly available to promote wider production and use of this eco-friendly option. The researchers also explore using microalgae for other applications, such as producing antioxidants and biodegradable plastics for fishing equipment, demonstrating broader potential for this sustainable material.
