The plain version

Deer Park calls itself the "Birthplace of Texas" — the San Jacinto battlefield, where Texas won its independence in 1836, sits at the town's edge. But the town itself came later: founded in 1892 by Simeon H. West, an Illinois transplant who named it for the deer on the prairie, and incorporated as a city in 1948.
