The people who show up when your house catches fire in Deer Park are, remarkably, volunteers — the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department is staffed entirely by volunteers, running three stations across the city and the industrial district. Emergency medical care is a blend: a city EMS department with full-time paramedics, backed by volunteer medics from the fire department, 24/7. And like the police, much of it is paid for by a dedicated voter-approved district — the Fire Control, Prevention & EMS District — with its own sales-tax stream and renewal ballots.
