Episode description

John Taylor Gatto’s essay, “The Seven-Lesson Schoolteacher,” critiques the American public school system. Gatto, a former New York State Teacher of the Year, argues that schools intentionally teach seven counterproductive lessons: confusion, class position, indifference, emotional dependency, intellectual dependency, provisional self-esteem, and constant surveillance. These lessons, he claims, systematically undermine students’ individuality, critical thinking, and self-reliance, creating a dependent populace suitable for a controlled society. He proposes that a free-market approach to education, reminiscent of pre-Civil War America, would foster a more fulfilling and independent citizenry.
